Hollywood Hair
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, which is why, when it comes to your hair, it’s only natural to use your favorite screen stars’ styling solutions.
By Kristianna Nichols

The advent of the new TV season for fall, arriving just after we have taken in the many summer movies released by Hollywood, always stirs up a hornet’s nest of new ideas on clothing, makeup, and, of course, hair. Basing your look on the latest pop-culture pin-ups is a tried-and-true strategy that goes back to Hollywood’s silent film days, when grandma ran out to her hairdresser and asked for the Clara Bow look! The strategy is no different today — only the faces (think Julia Roberts) and the types of hairdos have changed.
Whether you’re lusting after the looks of the multimedia superstar Jessicas (Simpson or Alba), the sultry cascading waves of a latter-day Marilyn Monroe type like Elisha Cuthbert, or the sophisticated and sleek sensuality of Demi Moore and Nicolette Sheridan, you only need keep one goal in mind: work with what works best for you and only you. Just because a look is hot and trendy doesn’t mean it will flatter your face or hair type and length. The trick is to find someone famous whom you resemble, then customize the cut, color, and styling to fit your features. Here are several suggested ways to adapt today’s hot celebrity’s ’dos just for you.
DEMI MOORE

HEATHER
Demi Moore = Straight Gorgeous Hair

DEMI MOORE
Even though curls are in, straight, gorgeous hair will never be excluded from the “red carpet” list, nor will long hair ever go out of style — that is if it’s healthy, shiny, and cut to appear thick. Actress Demi Moore is the envy of many wearers of lengthy locks, and someone to whom our own model Heather, with her alluring long hair, can aspire. Heather’s coif was slightly tapered up the sides to frame the face. A flat iron was used to control any fly-aways. Auburn colors were added to break up a too-solid hue, and the final touch came by lightly misting with a hair-shine product.

TREND: Adding lowlights creates depth and dimension on long, solid-colored hair such as Heather’s.

JESSICA SIMPSON

JAMIE
Jessica Simpson = Layered Curls

JESSICA SIMPSON
Jamie is a Jessica Simpson look-alike, but Jamie’s tresses are all hers — no extensions necessary. Jamie’s lightly tapered, pencil-straight hair was brought to life with fullness and bounce through of a touch of curling-iron magic. The curling iron was used periodically throughout the hair, while some strands were left uncurled for length. Her naturally blond hair, which has platinum highlights, was finger-teased at the roots. A great face such as Jamie’s is enhanced by a center part, bringing all the attention to her eyes and smile.
TREND: Jamie giVes the long, layered look a new twist of perfection by adding curls.

NICOLLETTE SHERIDAN

MICHELLE
Nicollette = Layers with Flipped Ends

NICOLLETTE SHERIDAN
Michelle embraces the Desparate Housewives drama of Nicolette Sheridan with this look. In the Hollywood tradition of blond bombshells, Michelle is a stunning example of trends that are perenially reborn to be wild. Her light brown hair was heavily highlighted with a fascinating honey hue that enhances her natural beauty and the coloring of her skin. Michelle’s hair was layered to the ear, and long swooping bangs create a frame for the face. By using a large round brush and blow dryer, the ends were flipped up to bring out a fun-loving informality.

TREND: Layers with flipped ends fit Michelle’s personality with softness and sass.

JESSICA ALBA

REMY
Jessica Alba = Long Loose Curls

Remy’s naturally wavy hair is the envy of many women, but she can still benefit from the finesse used for actress Jessica Alba’s alluring locks. The hair of both young women is blessed with body. In order to further emphasize Remy’s hair texture, we used tighter curls at the crown and controlled curves around her face. The hair was lifted at the roots and sprayed for height, because it’s easier to enhance natural waves with tighter curls rather than straightening them.

TREND: Long, loose curls all over flatter exotic eyes such as Remy’s.

ELISHA CUTHBERT

AMY

ELISHA CUTHBERT
Last, but certainly not least, one of the hottest styles of the moment takes inspiration from the golden age of Hollywood. In our case, though, the soft, sexy, more touchable hair made famous by Marilyn Monroe in the 1950s is worn by one of today’s haute celebs, Elisha Cuthbert, and our own model Amy. To achieve her knockout results, we spiral-curled her long golden hair into soft ringlets. We then set the hair using hot rollers, and later lightly teased it at the roots for lift and finger-combed it to separate the curls.

TREND: Gentle curls are all the rage and perfect for dewy-eyed beauties such as Amy.
