Spotlight on Designers
Lady M
Tell us about your business, its history, and how you build customer loyalty.
After retiring from some 30 years in retail, I felt it was time for me to get into wholesale/manufacturing. At that time, I saw a real need for a swimwear line that was more current and less “frumpy-dumpy”. There was also a great need in the industry for a quick turn-around. We generally stock between 300 and 500 swimsuits ready for immediate shipment. Special orders average a 4 – 6-week delivery. Our quality, efficiency, and price point have earned me a very loyal following.
Who is your main designer or designers?
Mike Valley
What divisions (e.g., Prom, Pageant, Social Occasion, Bridal, etc.) do you design for and market?
High-quality pageant swimwear are marketed under the label “Lady M Swimwear;” high-quality knit suits and dresses suitable for interviews and public appearences are designed and marketed under the label “Michael St. George.”
What size ranges do you offer?
Sizes 2 – 12.
Please identify three characteristics about your designs and business services that you are known for.
My designs range from conservative styles suitable for county fair pageants to being a trend-setter for the next season. My quality simply cannot be equalled, and my quick turn-around and price points are among the best in the business.
How do you keep your design ideas current?
My designs are not only current, but often set the new trends. I’m always watching for new details, trims, and fabrics, as well as what is winning awards and notice on the national fashion runways. I check out the European and Brazilian trends as well.
As a designer, where do you receive the most satisfaction?
I receive the most satisfaction when my newest designs hit the runways across America. It’s always a “rush” when people not only like what I do, but go on to win their competitions in my designs.
What fashion looks and fabric-usage trends do you predict will emerge in the coming year or two?
Satin Lycra gowns are gaining popularity, and I’m seeing a return of royal blue. Medium-bright pastels are really hot right now in swimwear.
Why do you continue to love what you do?
While working in retail for 30 years, I discovered I had a gift for making women feel beautiful. So I try to use my products and help transform an already “pretty” woman into a “stunning” one. I love a good challenge. I’m inspired every day, not only with other’s designs but also by the directions in which the industry is moving.
What design trends do you predict will fade from the fashion scene?
Conservative two-piece swimsuits are gone. String bikinis and low-rise swimsuits are “in.”
What aspects of the fashion business bring you the greatest satisfaction?
Creating new designs for the next season is the most fun. Having them sell… priceless!
