What have we just witnessed? Let’s see! We’re in Los Angeles… complete staging… rock-stage power lighting… professional sound system… performances beamed to large-screen video monitors… almost 800 screaming female fans… wholesome family atmosphere, entire families, including mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, and grandparents, who are attending, watching, and enjoying the event. On first inspection, could this be a scene form Hannah Montana or yet… High School Musical? The answer is a resounding “No.”
Better than the hottest shows this season, it’s the 2007 National American Miss National finals… live from Los Angeles, California, and just minutes from the magical world of Disneyland. Throughout the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, young people from across the United States descended upon the entertainment capital of the world to compete for the NAM national titles, with more than 2,000 trophies awarded, and over $400,000 in cash awards, prizes, and scholarships.
After a year of competing at the state level, young ladies arrived to chase the opportunity of representing their respective age divisions as a reigning National American Miss queen. Competing over the entire Thanksgiving week, divisional titles would be awarded in the following age-group divisions: Princess, ages 4-6, Junior Pre-Teen, ages 7-9, Pre-Teen, ages 10-12, Junior Teen, ages 13-15, Teen, ages 16-18, and Miss, ages 19-20. In addition to competing for the overall National American Miss accolades, deserving young ladies would also compete for the national NAM All-American titles. The National American Miss titles would honor those delegates who had captured their respective state titles, while the All-American titles are reserved for representatives who had finished in their states’ Top 5 court. This was quite an impressive collection of natural young women vying for a total of 12 overall NAM titles.
Smooth Red-Carpet Rollout
Natural… the all-important underlying theme of the National American Miss pageant system. Of utmost importance, this includes a no-makeup rule for younger contestants in the Princess, Junior Preteen, and Pre-Teen divisions. Natural and age-appropriate makeup is allowed within all other divisions. And most importantly, one must be prepared to have fun! After all, this is L.A.
Attending a national event of this size could be intimidating, but thanks to the professionalism and years of industry experience of the National American Miss national staff, the event runs as smooth as a red-carpet runway. Despite a constant flurry of activity in preparing for competitions, judges orientations, and multiple staging locales, everyone seems relaxed but excited at the week’s possibilities. After all, this is the National American Miss national finals.
