To add impact to your everyday look this season, try wearing your hair up. Mrs. Colorado America '03 Elisabeth Cartmill is a natural beauty with long, dark hair that she almost always leaves down. We decided to add a little spice and lots of charm to her appearance, with the help of the nationally known "Updo King," D.J., from Timothy D's salon of Denver. His advice on the hottest new "do's" for the season? Nothing but glamour — classic glamour, trendy glamour, and "back to the golden age of Hollywood" glamour. That's perfect for Elisabeth, whose schedule is packed with appearances, black-tie events, and parties.
1. A really good updo should highlight your best features, and Elisabeth's are her gorgeous hazel eyes and full lips. This design is simply slicked back into a one-quarter ponytail and back-combed into small, intricately placed barrel curls. The sculpted layers were placed throughout for detail, and an assortment of petal curls cascade forward to frame her face. Add an incredible pair of earrings to finish the look.
2. D.J. created the "Tianna" updo for women who have rounder, fuller faces. This style slims and adds height, with the center part directing the attention up to the face. Small side braids are added for weight placement and loosely pulled into a ponytail. The curls are then pinned on top for softness.
3. The "Raeanne" updo was designed to bring back the glamour of Hollywood during its "Golden Era." D.J. simply smoothed a high ponytail into large barrel rolls, which were stacked on top of each other to build height and drama. A layer of hair gloss is added for extra shine. Black eyeliner that is smudged at the lash line and a hint of red lipstick are the perfect way to finish this look.
4. Add color to your life (and parties) with purple. This hip hue deserves a one-of-a-kind coiffure. The "Celina" updo is just that — an attractive, trendy, young-at-heart way to celebrate this season. Simply twist small pieces of hair into "zulu" knots throughout the front and top of head. Backcomb into a spray that commands the ultimate attention.
5. We maximized Elisabeth's beauty with the "Emily," a nothing-but-glamour updo with a touch of classic softness. The hair is parted and wrapped into a ponytail, backcombed to add height, then flipped forward and smoothed back. The severe side part adds sleekness as well as frames a gorgeous face. Add an incredible necklace and matching crown to complete this beauty queen's look.
